Using what God gave me
Saturday, November 13, 2010 at 1:15PM It seems that Americans are enamored with the British accent. It does not matter where in the US you go, or where in the UK you are from ... we Brits are a subject of facination and novely because of the way we speak. I'd never given much thought to what I sounded like until I came to the US ... apparently it is 'cute' and 'adorable', apparently people would do anything I asked them too ... all because of the accent!
People try to imitate, being endearing but mostly doing a bad job, some don't understand the strange things I say, or very confused people think I am from Australia or New Zealand - as if!
I have never been such a subject of facination and curiosity.
Recently my little voice, that is often too fast and a bit gravelly in the mornings, has been in demand. Earlier in the year I did a voiceover for a promotional video for a ministry here in Kona called GVS (Global Virtual Studio). It was a last minute, on-the-fly thing ... but they used it and now when people learn about this cutting edge technology for movie making, I'm the one explaining it! You can find out more about GVS here. Or watch the promo and hear me here.
Then last week I got an email to see if the GVS team could give my email to someone looking for 'a professional voiceover female with a strong English accent' ... not being a pro, but fitting the other criteria, they passed me on. So this week I was in the studio recording a voiceover for project for a NotForSale campaign.
They are an incredible organization that partners with YWAM to engage with issues around human trafficking. Check them out here. When the project is finished, I will add a link if possible. It was a tiring few hours in the studio and despite how much I talk normally found myself a little nervous when every word has to be perfect and precise. Despite the fact that everyone else seems to love my accent, I'm not too keen on hearing it myself, so listening to the playbacks was a little weird. But we got it done with not too many takes and my friend Al was the engineer so it was fun to work with him.
It is exciting to be able to work with anti-trafficking initiatives in any way. It is estimated that 30 million people are trafficked every year. Sold or moved as slaves, forced, against their will, abused, controlled and in fear. Slavery may have been outlawed, but it is very much in existence. What can you do to engage with the issue to be part of a modern-day abolitionist movement.
