I am heading to Haiti...
Thursday, January 28, 2010 at 2:10PM It has been hard to miss the news over the past 2 weeks of the devastation to hit the nation of Haiti. Every kind of media has been full of the horrific images of destruction and death since the 7.0 earthquake. But there have also been amazing stories of hope and rescue beyond expectation.
As soon as I heard about the level of damage and subsequent need I have been stirred to go and help. I am
excited to be able to tell you that I will be heading out to join the relief work in the next few days. We plan to fly out on Sunday 31 Jan and stay for 2 weeks. I am part of a team of 6 from Kona YWAM - 5 women and 1 man.
YWAM has a long-term work in the city of St Marc in Haiti. It has found itself perfectly placed to be at the center of much of the work in Port Au Prince, the epic-center of the quake and in the rehabilitation work in St Marc. We have YWAM teams pulling people out of the rubble, with amazing testimonies of finding life where others had given up hope – including finding a 4 month old baby alive, then going back and finding her mother under more debris.
In St Marc they have a hospital with over 300 patients in need. The United Nations and local government has given YWAM the responsibility of helping re-house and rehabilitate approximately 10,000 displaced refuges. This is a huge opportunity and challenge. YWAM are mobilising 100s of people whose homes were raised to the ground. They are being taken in by local church communities and in temporary camps – where they are being fed, cared for and will be guided into starting to rebuild their lives in the midst of loss, pain and brokenness.
My team is made up of health care workers, counsellors, construction workers and administrators. We all love Jesus and believe he is the only answer to the brokenness and hopelessness. We want to be hands and feet bringing love and hope.
Many of you will know I trained and worked as a primary health care worker in India. I am used to seeing extreme poverty and working in basic conditions. I hope to be able use my skills to serve where there is health care needs. We will be taking out medical supplies and a readiness to be used where-ever and how-ever they need us.
Our heart is to serve, to strengthen and to love.
(Our team is LtoR: Martjin Bruggemann, Jo Mutch, Nadja Megler, Helen Yang, Becky Aegler and Kris Won)
We will be regularly updating this page with news and stories so check back
We need your help - financially and in prayers
Will you pray?
* For our protection as we travel and are working
* For wisdom to know how to serve best
* That God would use us help where there is brokenness and pain
* That we can bring hope.
Will you give?
I don’t normally ask for money in this way, but we have a real and immediate need.
Each of the team need to raise $2000 (£1300), so $12,000 (£7,500) total. This will cover our airfare, ground travel, food and accommodation. Can you help?
We want to also buy much needed medical supplies. Any money above and beyond $12,000 will be donated to YWAM Haiti to buy food and supplies for their ongoing work. This is a work that will continue for years to come.
